Why Top Successful People have Mentors

Why Top Successful People have Mentors

This week, I took time to study autobiographies of highly successful individuals and what I discovered from their decision making and strategies was profound, I realized a recurring trend in their career development and how they had their major breaks. In the lives of a good number of them, the significant level of strategic partnership and mentors helped them along the way of their career growth. Being able to lean on, get support and advise from those who have previously walked in your shoes is a sure upper-hand to success.

Recommendations about mentorship cannot be overemphasized, Mark Zuckerberg enjoyed mentorship from Steve Jobs, Bill Gates credited Warren Buffet for teaching him how to deal with tough situation and how to think long term also, Opera Winfrey also emphasized the influence of Maya Angelou on her career, stating she doesn’t think anyone in the world makes it without having a mentor.

Who really is a mentor?

A mentor is somebody who provides guidance, encouragement and support with broad range o personal and professional benefits which ultimately leads to improved performance in workplace and career growth. The functions of a mentor are very dynamic and depend solely on the needs of the mentee (person being mentored ) and the mentor role may change as the needs of the mentee change.

Why you need a mentor

Ordinarily, mentorship is a relationship in which a more experienced or knowledgeable person helps to guide a lesser experienced person, the mentor usually has a certain level of expertise and stronghold of industry processes and by default, knowledge is transferred to aid career development. Decision-making processes in job or career choice can be better undergone with the help of mentors who have been in such a situation before.

A new and upcoming trend in career development is having multiple mentors. This can be helpful because it entails an all-round development, having more than one mentor widens your knowledge and resource base. Learning the skills and behaviours of industry leaders is highly essential for undergraduates, fresh graduates and junior employees who plan to advance to higher positions.

Mentorship can be adapted in various career path as, trading, industry, technology competencies, organizational culture, work process and even interview preparation because it helps to set and meet professional and personal goals with good objectives while also providing the guidance and constructive feedback necessary for self-evaluation.

A mentor is great to seek out at any stage of your career. They can help give you a new perspective and added confidence that you are on the right path or steer you towards a better path.

I graduated with a 2:2 and I have realised that TalentMine doesn’t bring up opportunities for them which I feel is wrong because the more we over look them we find out most never get the opportunities to grow their career, and then cause most to go into depression or illegal business.
